It’s no coincidence that this massive transfer of wealth — basically, from workers to investors — took place at a time when union membership was in steep decline. In 1983, according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, 20.1 percent of wage and salary workers belonged to a union. In 2010, only 11.9 percent were union members.
Eugene Robinson is right. As long as there is this massive transfer of wealth, the dream will never be realized.

Wonder what would happen if the unemployed were to become unionized and petition the congress en masse.

Good question! I wondered if anyone has thought about doing this?

I think more and more people are beginning to look at all kind of organization efforts. And we will have to work through it before "they" throw us a bone or another Fox News program.

The memorial to the Rev. King is beautiful and ideally situated. It should be an eternal reminder, not just of King himself but, of what he represented and the remaining work to be done.
His inspiration will live on.

Al, when did you go to see the memorial? What was the attitude of the other visitors?

PIK, I have not seen it yet in person. Irene spoiled the day.
My comments are based on pictures and my familiarity with the location of Dr. King's monument with respect to the other monuments.
I live in the D.C. metropolitan area and frequent the mall often. Each new monument and museum gets its share of criticism from those who want their voice heard but there is very little negative criticism for the King memorial except for the "Drum Major" reference.
This new tribute to King will be a very imposing and dramatic addition.
