I read two news stories recently, involving two distinct landmark moments of the twentieth-century black freedom struggle that at first glance seemed only of historical interest.
But, in fact, they’re even more important than that. For the efforts to redress the grievous wrongs they entail keenly illuminate the complexity very often involved in righting past wrongs – and they also underscore a critical challenge facing black Americans and the larger American society.
