The report called for more mentoring opportunities, school reform, and professional development for teachers, together with culturally appropriate retention programs, and more research on ways to improve teaching methods.

I agree with the article, but wonder this. Blacks, Hispanics and Asians are mentioned in this and most other articles on the educational system. Yet, Native-Americans are suffering the same problems, why are they never mentioned? A question that the ''powers that be'' should be addressing. Exclusion of the First Nations children is in itself segregation.

I agree but Native parents must do what the others are doing such as forming groups and attaching those groups to successful groups like the NAACP, MoveOn, etc. One must be part of the fight if one wants others to fight with you and for you.

Starting your own schools is great! That means that you can teach the children the truth about the past.

The article says the causes are:

The barriers to success for African-American males include under-representation in programs for gifted students, a high absenteeism and dropout rate, poor teacher-student relationships and lack of parental support.

The article says the solution is:

The report called for more mentoring opportunities, school reform, and professional development for teachers, together with culturally appropriate retention programs, and more research on ways to improve teaching methods.

    Anybody up for blaming teachers??

The article offers solutions based primarily on improving teacher performance when the problems listed; 1. AA students underrepresented in gifted programs, Cause: AA males don't go to class, i.e. parental neglect 2. high absenteeism rate, Cause: parental neglect 3. High dropout rate, Cause: parental neglect 4. Poor teacher-student relationships, Cause: parental neglect, disrespect 5. lack of parental support, Cause: parental neglect

The article wants school reform, prof. development for teachers and research on teaching methods.

FOR GODSSAKE, ITS THE PARENTS NOT THE TEACHERS.

Im 4Me, in your opinion, how is it solely the parents?

I quoted problems from the article one by one, and traced them largely to parental neglect. Once again:

the problems listed; 1. AA students underrepresented in gifted programs, Cause: AA males don't go to class, i.e. parental neglect 2. high absenteeism rate, Cause: parental neglect 3. High dropout rate, Cause: parental neglect 4. Poor teacher-student relationships, Cause: parental neglect, disrespect 5. lack of parental support, Cause: parental neglect

Is it possible that the failure of you and others to understand the root cause is why this problem can't seem to be fixed? Who would you blame for this inner city problem?
