North Carolina is the first state to consider a $20,000 payment to victims of sterilizations, but it is doubtful that the Republican-controlled legislature will set aside the necessary funds.
CBS News noted that more than 60,000 women in 32 states were sterilized from the 1920's to the 1970s to keep down welfare costs. The practice is no longer in use.

CBS News got that last paragraph wrong. Just ask any Deaf person about that.
All the same, what was rampant in that era was a popular notion that science = revelations of God's secrets of Natural Law...the biggest reason to revisit Clarence Thomas' confirmation hearings in which he stated that he believed in God's Natural Law. People/voters who didn't live through that hellish era which also produced the lobotomy of Rose Kennedy didn't catch the magnitude of Thomas' beliefs.
