Despite the Great Recession’s official end, America still faces a tight and fiercely competitive labor market with five unemployed workers for every one job opening. In this climate, when employers can be especially choosy about whom they hire, and some major companies appear to be engaging in a discriminatory practice that hurts the unemployed, a disproportionate number of them black.

The NELP report indicates that such major employers as Bank of America, Omni Hotel, RadioShack, Lowe’s and Domino’s Pizza routinely exclude applicants without considering the facts on a case-by-case basis. Job ads for these and other companies require that candidates are able to pass a background check and must not have felonies or misdemeanors. Many employers are using outside companies that specialize in background checks. These companies, which are part of a fast-growing industry, have devised a system that helps to automatically reject applicants with criminal records.

Black or not, If there is literally no debt you can pay to society for a wrongdoing so you can rejoin that society, if you are indeed permenantly barred from success due to even a misdemeanor offense what does that say about this country where we have the highest per capita prison population in the world?

There was a movie out years ago.... Gattica..... People disqualified for jobs because of their genetics. If you can do one, you can do the other. Once you have an electronic database... you can do just about anything with it.

And yet, their CEOs can bilk the nation in terms of fuzzy financial dealings, run companies into the ground, and do other, outside, illegal activities and simply float from CEO desk to CEO desk.
