First, at theUniversity of Alabama, a white student was disciplined for yelling racial slurs at a black student. Days later, racial slurs were found written on a campus sidewalk. "Unfortunately, this incident is not an isolated occurrence on this campus," the president of the university's Black Faculty and Staff Association said.

Meanwhile, a Murray State University professor has resigned after allegedly telling black freshman Arlene Johnson last August that he wasn't surprised that she didn't show up on time to a film he started 15 minutes before class began. Why? Because slaves never showed up on time.

Racism is never any good, but when it interferes with what should be some of the most confidence-building and positive years of a young person's life (not to mention, in an environment in which they live, learn and socialize all at once), it's extra problematic.

Unfortunately, racism, bigotry, and bullying because of skin color, religion, etc. starts a lot earlier than college. By the time they get to college, they've already experienced it. Kids can be extremely cruel to others kids that are different from them, or who they view as weak, who they see as easy targets to bully.

I've always believed they learn this behavior in the home, more so than peer pressure. I learned tolerance early on from my parents, and to come to the defense of those who were being bullied. Some kids aren't as fortunate as I was.

PowerisKnowledge, I agree with Isabella, that it is learned at home and by the time they get to collage it's ingrained in them. Sad as that may be,it is what it is. I once was refused entry to a class by the teacher. I was told that ''Indians'' didn't belong in this class because we were not capable of learning. Of course this was many many years ago, but it seems not much has changed.

Good post Power.

I would like to add that his excuse ''I was depressed'' doesn't hold water. I guess that I could say I was depressed and smack him in the mouth and it would be OK.

Fire him.

So the professor started the class early and technically she was on time? Interesting. Fire him!

Unfortunately, college professors are just as prone to having bigots in their midst as any other group. As a retired professor, I always laugh when I hear conservatives talk about how liberally biased colleges and universities are. While there are, admittedly many liberals on college campuses, I have run into my fair share of conservatives and also my fair share of bigots {racial, religious, and gender). I don't mind the conservatives [students should get a balanced perspective] but I do have a problem when that conservatism starts to blend with a sense of group supremacy which I began to see more and more frequently in the second half of my career. These professors thought that they were actually preaching a conservative philosophy but were actually crossing the line into bigotry.
