Bob McChesney and Victor Pickard, both media scholars, have edited a new book, a collection of essays about the state of journalism in America. The book is titled Will the Last Reporter Please Turn Out the Lights: The Collapse of Journalism and What Can Be Done to Fix It. And here's an introduction to the book. As the basis for self-government is an informed citizenry, and as the fourth estate, as the institution with primary responsibility for making an informed citizenry possible, the existential crisis for news media is in fact an existential crisis for self-government.
