When's the last time you looked up a number in the phone book? For us, it was probably around 1999. But the Yellow Pages keep coming. Every year there's another stack of trash delivered to your doorstep.

I use my Yellow Pages on a regular basis!

i havent for years and at my place for about ten years I got no less than 7 of them for previous tenants.(and really 14 as they give you a small one and a big one now) I beg them to stop. I finally threatened to sue them for the labor of having to recycle 7 each year and now I only get one, despite I signed up to have that one stopped as well.

They dont want to stop see, as then they cant say "this goes out to [this many people] each year"

well i dont farken want one

I'm glad you use your yellow pages. You should be able to opt in to get that book. I, however, get 3 different phone books each year, and I use none of them. What a waste of paper!

I agree, literfairy and Naughtia. You should opt in, if you want them. I prefer the internet. I am over being tired of seeing my yearly stacks of unwanted phonebooks on my doorstep... yes, recycling is cool... but how many people throw them away and they end up in landfills... cool /sarc

Good for them. I take them from the curb and place them directly into the recycle bin. That's a waste of resources, time, effort, and money.

It's not your time, effort, money, and since paper pretty much literally grows on trees, the resources aren't an issue. So why do you have a problem with it?

The coupons are great and Internet searches don't hit always hit on everything.

are you trolling last stone? well it is his time and effort to pick it up from his doorstep and put in the recycling bin, The bin is now heavier, he still has to bring the bin to the curb. We also pay a little thing called taxes(sometimes called fees) to the recyclers to pick up the telephone books. On telephone book day they are going to use more gas.

Trees are a renewable resource, very true, but we have a crap load less than we used to, why? cause they take a freaken long time to grow and we use them faster than they regrow. which is one reason why PEOPLE FREAKEN RECYCLE IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Besides for trolling, why does it bother you that he does not want to be forced to take an unsolicited phone book? You do get that part? unsolicited? People like you can still get one for free. WHY ARE YOU TRYING TO FORCE US TO TAKE IT?

interenet searches can find a changed number or a changed address or a new business long before the printed form of the yellow pages can.. WHICH IS ONE REASON WHY THEY ARE ONLINE AS WELL.

You use a lot of those styrofoam cups don't you. :)

Wasteful attitudes like this do nothing to make our environment better.

And the article does not say they are getting rid of the phone books period, people who still want them can still get one, they will just have to request it, or are you saying that is too much work?

I don't care what anyone does with or without a phonebook or why they would or wouldn't want one. My question is more along the lines or why should there be an uprising against something that affects the people who dont want a book sooo very little.

And im no troll so put the pitch fork away.

OK lets play this game. Lets say the businesses that take out ads pay for the phone books, they are getting very little return on their investment now that most do not use phone books anymore. So now those businesses have to take out other forms of advertising to get their name out. who pays for it in the end, you the consumer.

Next lets look at the lumber industry. 555 million phone books are produced every year, with them using so much of the wood pulp supply it causes other paper products prices to increase (I.E. books, notebooks, school paper, ETC.) who is going to cover that increase, you the consumer.

lastly the increased burden to the city to recycle these books has to be paid by someone. Once again who will be paying for this, you the tax payers.

I love styrafoam cups. But they are really only good for one use, after that you should throw it away and get another.

      Ryan-

Why is Rush L going to be livid?

      Personally I like the idea.

What would be much more effective, if you want to save the trees, have this apply to junk mail sent by the Post Office. If this were to happen, then you will see someone livid, and it won't be Rush.

This would be excellent to do nationwide, I'm sick of 2-3 times a year seeing a mountain of phone books at my apartment buildings entrance way (3 times as many as there are apartments). After 2 weeks the pile is barely reduced by a 1/4, but then one day they are all gone, and I know they all go directly into the trash.

I'd get over it eventually, but at first I would miss the easy delivery of packing and paper mache materials. :)

I'm also think that it's a great thing that they would still offer books to those who actually do want them.

Some of them go into homeless peoples trash can fires, so no harm there.

I ahven't used a phone book is YEARS! This is a great idea. If I could get online and register to never get one again, I would be happy.

Those who don't want them should be able to opt-out receiving them. On-line doesn't work for me because there are still many businesses that don't have Web sites and those that do list their Web addresses in the yellow pages. Even though many people believe that everyone should be on the Internet, there are those who don't want to be and that should remain their option.

You're missing the point. Some of us prefer using phones and some businesses prefer not to build and maintain web sites.

        I understand YOUR point.

MY point is that businesses do not have to maintain ANYTHING to be listed online.

And I didn't think we were discussing the use of phones?

I prefer calling friends and neighbors to ask for the number. Sometimes I pick up the phone book and call a random person to ask them for assistance or just talk a while. It is fun. They have no idea who you are, but most of the time they try to be nice.
