Church-State Wstchdog Group Says Prosoed USAID Changes Will Allow Taxpayer Funding Of Churches, Mosques And Temples
Regulations issued under President George W. Bush state that U.S. tax funds may not underwrite the construction of buildings used primarily for worship. Under the proposed new rules, the government could construct any facility, including houses of worship, that might “promote tourism or other related economic activities.”
Said the Rev. Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United, “The government cannot use taxpayer money to build churches, mosques or temples in America, and it shouldn’t be permitted to do it overseas either. Houses of worship should be built and maintained by their members, not the taxpayers.”
We're still being haunted by that damn Bush! Why won't the @!$%#er go away!
The budget can be balanced if we get rid of all the unnecessary foreign aid!

I don't like the idea of U.S. money being spent to build, rebuild or repair religious structures or buildings here or overseas. The U.S. political system is what's sending the U.S. to the poor house!
Damn the politicians! All of them!

It is always astonishing to me that the right wing of our political parties claim to be so patriotic yet they keep working for things like this which are transparently contrary to what the United States of America was founded on. Separation of church and state is one of the most basic concepts built into the fabric of our country. In a separate thought: I am boggled by the fact that we are spending money in other countries when there is so much need in the U.S. and so much talk about our debt and deficit.

And that's all they do, Tara Sitser, is claim to be patriotic because I surely haven't seen the Teapublicans demonstrate patriotism. The Teapublicans have shown us that church equal votes and nothing else.

PowerisKnowledge, I think you've hit the bullseye. At its root this is all about getting votes. And somewhere a few decades back the creators of the "Teapublicans" (Love that !) figured out that they needed a large group of voters they could manipulate. That's why the religious right became the base of the Republican party.
Why should we give any money to a religious institution at all. If there members will not give them money for what ever they do "Don't give them My Money"
It reminds me of all the tax breaks that we give to big business. A lot of those tax breaks go to republicans "well democrats too," to run for office. We continue to enrich company's and religious institution's for there benefit not "us" the people.

Very good points, don-72. While I am not opposed to foreign aid when we are talking about bringing medical care or fresh water to people in poverty-stricken countries it seems wrong-headed to be giving federal money to religious organizations - in other countries no less!
