I know it was the article headline, but the car would hardly be powered by lasers. The laser would simply be the ignition source to replace traditional spark plugs resulting in a slightly improved fuel efficiency. It's a cool new innovation, but not a game changer.

Linked below that article was another one from late last year from Discovery about a gas-turbine/electric hybrid from Jaguar which probably has the potential to provide a much greater jump in efficiency than a new ignition source, since turbine engines can run at efficiencies much higher than typical piston engines.
