Todd Elder suggests that nearly one million children may be misdiagnosed. It's back-to-school season—the time of year when, for many families, the ABCs meet ADHD. It's never easy for kids with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, especially when confronted with new routines and new academic challenges.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, 4.5 million children have been diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, but experts still don't know for sure what causes it. New research points to exposure to common pesticides, particularly organophosphate—a man-made toxin originally developed for chemical warfare and now used extensively in agriculture.

I believe some of this can be attributed to lazy parenting, poor diet and boredom.

another contributing factor in the misdiagnosis of ADHD could be school age. if the child (like my son) is right at the cut off for kindergarten, then they wont be as mature as the other students in the class who've been 5yrs old for a while. it could be that the child is just acting their age. my son had kids in his kindergarten class last year who were going to be 6yrs old a few months after the school year started, which in turn made my son stick out like a sore thumb because he had just made 5yrs 2wks after the school year started.

You're so right Beverly in ATL, GA. Instead of requiring children to attend school by a certain and, it should be based upon maturity.

ADHD diagnosis, treatment and medicines = $$ for big pharma.

Expect to see more of it.

just one more reason why psychiatrists and pediatricians are so quick to prescribe medication for the little ones. not enough questions are being asked. the particular behaviors are evident, but the reasons behind the behavior....not so much. :-/
