PoliTRICKS: America Has Never Been a Democracy!

America was never intended to be a democracy and it never has been; despite the lies you've been told all your life. The U.S. constitution only gave the vote to white, male landowners; even poor white males were not allowed the vote . . . and they ignored blacks, women, Hispanics, "Native Americans" and others they left out. Slowly this rule was changed until almost 200 years later in 1964 when every adult was "given the right to vote", but that's not the point. What are you allowed to vote for?

America is a country born of hypocrisy and nurtured in racism and oppression. How stupendous a hypocrite do you have to be to write a document that declares "All men are created equal" while at that very moment you have two hundred human beings chained in your back yard working as your slaves? America's political system (which was designed by these hypocrites) is no better that a shell game which gives rich people control and the rest of us the shaft.

A democracy is a society which allows all of its members to have a say in what that society does. When was the last time you voted on whether or not the government will raise taxes?

When put this way I have to agree. America is not a democracy and was never intended to be one.

Yea totally true and nice find, the Government should continue to evolve as we do, as it has. Being nostalgic over a fictitious dream of America being this perfect country is half this countries problems today, people are literally scared into regression and see it as a good thing. We need to forge ourselves into a better example of democracy, not cave in to the propaganda. What we have now is technically a Republic, but truthfully it's oligarchy of corporate and personal interest. We need change ....continuously

Power,

When was the last time you voted on whether or not the government will raise taxes?

Just a few months ago. We voted on whether to raise property taxes in order to pay for a (badly needed) new roof on our local high school. It leaks, and several rooms are un-usable.

The tax hike failed. In Hunterdon County, NJ (4th richest county in the U.S.) we won't pay for a new roof for our school.

The U.S. is not a democracy, and for good reason. A democracy allows for the 'Tyranny of the Masses'. Would slavery ever have ended in a democracy? Would we ever achieve marriage equality? Civil rights? Mixed-race marriage? Would we stand a chance of ending the Death Penalty in a 'Christian' nation?

The Founding Fathers didn't get everything right, but they were dead on with this - we have a Republic, with 3 branches of government, and checks and balances. And I think it's a very good thing.

When our elected officials try to make gay marriage unconstitutional, our courts can override their decisions. In a real democracy, that would be impossible.
