After moving into a middle class neighborhood, in Virginia, about 6 years ago. I happened to meet the elderly lady next door, while out for a walk. Within a minute or so, she told me, she was very upset when her immediate neighbors had moved in, more than 20 years prior. She said "they are colored, you know"
"Do tell?" says I. She went on to say they had been the best neighbors she ever has had, and even their children had proved to be good. I walked away shaking my head in disbelief. The fact that she even told me the story, surprised me. Although being white, I had never heard that kind of comfort, with speaking ill of someones race.
Later, my name was published, in the local paper, as the host of a bake sale for Obama. I awoke to a message on my home phone. An old southern man told me, in his thick drawl "I hope you raise a lot of money for that n..., We are going to get you tomorrow" (the day of the sale) I cried tears of fear, for the safety of my employees, kids that went along with my plan with a smile and no worry. I called a friend, who sent 2 big burly friends. About 2 hours in, I noticed one of my 'guards' was armed, eeek! I think I had the only bake sale on record, with an armed guard, watching us and our cupcakes!
We have a very long way to go, America. This crap goes on EVERY day.

Good for Mr. Willborn for standing strong and putting this issue in the national spotlight. I wish him and his wife success in their law suit. We still have a long way to go.

When is our country going to give up worrying about skin color? It is the 21st century for pete's sake. I thought that bigots were becoming a smaller and smaller minority--and then I read stories like this.
When I moved into my neighborhood, I became a minority-I was the only white person on my block. I could not ask for better neighbors. We share tools and help each other out. My son repairs the bikes of the kids in the neighborhood. We have spent Saturdays working on each others cars. This neighborhood is poor working class--not Black or white. I guess that living here blinded me to the fact that there are still bigots wandering around spewing hate.
