As a result of white supremacy/racism, white people cannot be whole human beings. If we do not treat people of color as equals, we not only deny them their own humanity, but we deny ourselves as well. We believe that part of being fully human means treating each other with dignity, and practicing a belief that all people should have the chance to reach their full potential. White people cannot reach our full potential as humans if we treat people of color as lesser human beings.

How does racism harm people of color?

Racism harms people of color, and kills them. White supremacy affects their health, safety, educational aspirations, access to housing, economic options and psychological well-being (Kivel, 2002). Effects of racism are associated with psychiatric symptoms, physical diseases, and the general well being of people of color (Klonoff and Landrine, 1999; Miller & Garran, 2007). A study published in the American Journal of Public Health estimated that hundreds of thousands of deaths could have been prevented from 1991 to 2000 if African Americans had received the same care as whites (Woolf, 2004).

4real?

I will say this: I think all racism is wrong it, hurts the individual equally when it comes to emotional well-being; and in some situations could hinder whites in similar ways that minorities were hindered.

I think in our history the majority has had more power to affect the minority so I cant say the impact of racism has been equal, but I also cant say what it would have looked like if the positions had been reversed.

I think the only utility in looking at the past ills of our history is to understand with empathy the etiologies of disparates created by those circumstances, but not to excuse the current perpetuation of those circumstances.

I bolded empathy because I truly believe it to be the key to solving current racial tension

Ozark Mountain Sage

Systemic racism dramatically affects people of color in every aspect of their lives. Even when it is not visible, white supremacy shapes how all social institutions operate.

First let us get one thing straight, there is only one race and that is the human race. Racism should be called differentism. Those people are different, they do not have white skin, they must be inferior. Those people come from a different background than us, they must be inferior. Those people are of a different religion, they must be inferior. That guy is different, he has a funny accent, he is a foreigner from Germany, and he is Jew to boot, he must be inferior unless of course his name is Albert Einstein.
