The new health law signed by President Obama this spring contains the most sweeping changes to the American health system in a generation.

The law will extend health insurance to 32 million currently uninsured Americans by 2019, and will also have an impact on how nearly every American buys insurance and what insurance must cover.

I like the way the information is broken down--clear and concise.

A: Under the legislation, most Americans will have to have insurance by 2014 or pay a penalty

Same shaft as the auto con.

Meanwhile back at whereTF they are supposed to govern...EPA, MMS, State Dept, and probably the rest of the lamos in government continue to give out waivers to their buddies that ultimately created this health crises.

I don't dispute what you said because the insurance companies were looking for loopholes before the law was passed. But nothing is ever perfect and the law can be worked on and improved upon as time goes by. I can even see a single payer and/or a public option in the near future. The point of the bill was to bring relief to those who wouldn't have otherwise gotten it.

Its a good article, however, I don't think it effectively addresses measures in the bill that will drive down cost of insurance and of medical goods and services. For example there is funding to train more doctors. More doctors means less pay for doctors (supply/demand). Less pay lowers the cost of care.

I believe the exchanges will drive down the cost of insuance as well. To sell on the exchange insurance companies will have to prove proper capitalization to pay claims. They will also have to offer standardized policies (all policies in the same class will be the same). The policies offered will be listed on the exchange. Probably online. When you choose a policy, in a certain class the only difference between insurers will be price. This engenders price competition. Once you have standardized policies for individuals it is likely they will become standard for group policies as well. Employers can just get bids on a "Basic Plan" policy and know exactly what they are getting.

Science based treatment standards will limit malpractice suits. If a doctor follows a clear guidline for treatment and does so competently they will be indemnified from being sued based on decisions they make.

I would prefer single payer funding for health care since it enables complete and thorough data collection on cost drivers and can implement nationwide policies to control cost through all demographics. Even now, Medicare policies drive the entire industry only they are focused only on senior care.

The law is a good first step in a process for improvement. Without a documented process you have chaos. With chaos the law of the jungle prevails. The strong (wealthy) get excellent treatment and the weak (poor) get none.

Single payer works for me. Thanks for the insight Man of Knowledge and you're right, the article didn't effectively addresses measures in the bill that will drive down cost of insurance and of medical goods and services. I believe it was an overview of the law.
