The New (Old) Language of Anti-Mexican Racism

Mexican immigrants and other Latinos are today being described in terms such as "dangerous" and "criminal." They are called "lazy" and reported to be "lurking on street corners." The way they dress is said to be "funny" or "dirty." They are "flooding the country."

The new language of anti-Mexican racism is actually drawn on centuries-old images from the white racial framing of African Americans, now repurposed for other people with brown skin.

The current white diatribe targeting Mexican immigrants—revealed in polls, media commentaries, actions of Arizona legislators—is much like the invective used against African Americans during the civil rights era.

Where does this language come from? It’s developed over centuries of real racial oppression, including slavery and Jim Crow, by whites that wanted to explain the social order in ways that rationalize the fact that black Americans were consistently at the very bottom of society. Now, a similar strategy is being used against Mexicans, Mexican Americans, and other Latinos.

This white racist frame adapts to new groups by re-imposing old racist imagery and stereotypes, with some tweaking.

The authors of this piece are absolutely correct, same old bigoted language used against a different group. There is no way the Tea Baggers can defend this!

WBAI radio station from New York. You do not hear this nonsense from the majority of AZ citizens whether white or Latino. Illegal is illegal. The only ones trying to make this about racism are the supporters of illegal aliens or racists against whites. I believe there have been plenty of whites that have fought and stood up for LEGAL citizens rights regardless of race or nationality.

TinFoil Annie, you know not what you're talking about. Are you familiar with the term "putting your foot in your mouth?" Well, that's you. The arguments are not about supporting illegal aliens, it's about profiling. There's a difference between the two just to let you know.

Your sources are not credible and I saw absolutely no proof or any pertinent example of what you speak to. You are a reverse racist attacking predominantly white middle Americans in an effort to secure a voting block for Dems. Arizona has a huge problem which the Federal Government will not do anything about. In your liberal mind you think you can use the race card to stir up a group of people who, by definition, are not citizens of the US and have no rights here. To ignore all of the problems resulting from "Illegal Imigration" is stupid and very sinister if you do so for political gain. I beleive that is your goal and I understand why you believe the things you do. Too bad that you hate your own country so much that you are trying to undermine it in an effort to "Fundamentally Change America".

Well put T, thank you.

Blacks should be the most concerned about the hiring of illegal aliens. According to The Economic Policy Institute, employment rates for blacks continue to fall. There are several factors involved, of course, and the Institute speculates that the “labor market still discriminates against minorities, particularly African American males.” They’re right for the wrong reasons.

The assumption is that blacks are being discriminated against by white employers because they’re black. False. Black workers are discriminated against because they’re legal citizens and unionized workers, and it’s cheaper to hire illegal, non-unionized aliens.

Sounds like you are cutting your noses off to spite your faces.

Anthropologist Jane Hill has pointed to the widespread use of mock Spanish by whites–made-up terms such as “no problemo,” “el cheapo,” “watcho your backo,” “hasty banana,” and “no way, Jose.” These terms incorporate a negative framing of Mexicans and Mexican Americans.

Lighten up, Francis. Mexican-Americans make a similar hash of English, and I don't hear you calling that Mexican racism against whites. I routinely inject broken French into my conversation, but that hardly makes me anti-French bigot. Hell, more than a few words have entered the English language as broken loan words from other languages: Cajun being just one example. Some form of pidgin always comes into existence where two language groups intersect.

Yes, I was in a debate about "mock Spanish" the other day and while, yes, I do realize that it can be, and has been, mocked (same as with any other language - I can think of some especially egregious cases of mock Chinese, which I'll get to in a bit), instances such as "no problemo" I hardly think qualify. As a Texan, I hear such phrasing often, have all my life, and have heard it from all population groups, inclusive of both Latinos who can, and can not, actually speak Spanish.

Generally "mock" language is a mish mash of sounds that are supposed to mimic (however inaccurately) a given language, but which actually does not contain words (except perhaps by accident) and does not serve to convey information, beyond the mocking itself. I hate to go there, but I will, by way of illustration: "ching chong chow che chow" was tossed at my brother at school, very often with the speaker pulling back at the edges of their eyes with their fingers, to mock his being Chinese or "Japanesey" (he's neither; he's Korean). That's mock language. But if I asked those same people if they could toss me a spare pencil for the Scan Tron, and they said "no problemo", it wasn't mocking - it meant a pencil would shortly be on its way.

Further, there is intent. Not all will recognize the difference between "mock" and "fake" ('mock' in common modern parlance being, well, mocking, rather than a pure synonym), but I do, as in this, which does not offend me at all, nevermind English is my primary language. Mind, perhaps it was meant to be mocking? I honestly couldn't tell you... But I'm not feeling particularly offended, either way.

Mexican immigrants and other Latinos are today

One problem I have with that is, sure, today, but let's not pretend this is a new phenomenon. Anyone who is passingly familiar with Speedy Gonzales will recognize this. To those who are interested, I would recommend checking out "The Called Them Greasers" by Arnoldo De León.

Seems we are all 'slurred'.

Name calling is not a good argument against defending US Citizens and deporting all illegals.

I'm not sure what you mean, Annie? Anyone can be slurred, and calling someone names is never an argument for or against anything.

Your sources are not credible and I saw absolutely no proof or any pertinent example of what you speak to.

Are you speaking to me or to the author of the piece? Or do you know the difference?

You are a reverse racist attacking predominantly white middle Americans in an effort to secure a voting block for Dems.

Can you prove this? If not, you're committing slander. And if you can't prove that I'm any of those things then go some place and sit down because you're not making sense. And your use of predominantly white middle Americans proves that you, indeed, are the racist.

Well this just goes to show how you lack reading with comprehension because in an earlier post I said it's about profiling and not about people being in this country illegally. Your use of predominantly white middle Americans proves, again, that you, indeed are the racist.

I believe that is your goal and I understand why you believe the things you do.

T is for T-Time, you don't know what I believe. Unless, of course, you're clairvoyant or telepathic, and we know you're neither because it takes great will power and control to be either and from your comments you have neither the will power or control.

Too bad that you hate your own country so much that you are trying to undermine it in an effort to "Fundamentally Change America".

I hate my country why? Because I don't believe as you do? Because I don't believe that innocent people should be harmed or used as a means to an end? Because I possess common sense? Because I believe in the U.S. Constitution? Because I don't believe in making up laws to cause harm?

No T is for T-Time, it is you who hate the United States of America! It is you who hate being an American. It is you who hate Americans. It is you who hate the U.S. Constitution. It is you and people like you who are doing everything in your will power to undermine the U.S. Constitution in an effort to "Fundamentally Change America back to the way it was when Native Americanswere placed in internment camps called reservations and striped of their culture, their language, and their children stolen from them to make them un-Indian; when Japanese Americans were placed in internment camps that were poorly-constructed barracks surrounded by barbed wire, sentry posts and armed guards because parents or ancestors were from Japan; and Black Americans were slaves. It is you who believes it's all right to make up laws that will cause harm to American citizens.

Earlier today I watched an interview of Amy Kremer, Director of Tea Party Express, and she said people like you, people who carry hate signs, people who are racist, etc., are not members of the Tea Party Express because The Tea Party Express is not about social issues.

Amy Kremer said the Tea Party Express is only about fiscal issues.

    1) fiscal responsibility

    2) limited government

    3) free market

She also stated that the Tea Party Express is not an arm of the republican party.

Sarah Palin is not their leader because the Tea Party Express has no leader.

On the program she denounced you and people like you.

T is for T-Time, you want to return to the time when no one was held accountable when non-whites and poor whites who were referred to as poor white trash were treated like defenseless animals. But I guess being a Teabagger, what can one expect!

You and TinFoil Annie want to make this a black and white issue when it's not. Well it just goes to show how easy it is to pull the blinders over the eyes of those who don't have the ability to see beyond their own pathetic needs because they're follow any agenda as long as it coincides with their own whether it's right or wrong.

Your calling me names will not win you any points, in fact, it makes you appear impotent.

    reverse racist

Yes, that phrase alone is enough to send up the red flags, as it is on the one hand meaningless (racism is racism) and on the other still manages to buy into a paradigm of white entitlement (and power).

3.1 TinFoil Annie, your comment has nothing to do with the topic. Why are you trying to make this a black and white issue. Please take your views to a seed that parellel your thoughts.
