There are some ads that just stick with you. One that I've never forgotten was a 30 second commercial that began with a terrified blond woman wearing tight jeans, sky high heels and a bustier (it was the early 90s) and running down an alley as a chain saw wielding maniac chased her.

After discovering an unlocked door, she flung it open and: SURPRISE! All her friends were waiting with a birthday cake. And the guy she had been so desperately fleeing? Well, he followed in after her, pulled off his mask, and grinningly cut the cake with his chainsaw. As the screen faded to a Guess Jeans logo, a sultry voice informed the viewer that these jeans were wearable in any situation.

These ads turn my stomach but women eat them up. It could be fantasies many women would like to experience or low self-esteem. And it's really sad because many of these ads are created by men. It just goes to show what these men think of women and until women elevate themselves and stop supporting these sick @!$%#s they'll never be taken seriously.

Women fantasize quite a bit. When an ad with adventure and panicky stuff jumps at them it triggers a victim scenario that they can really get into.

It cannot be their fault if they are a victim can it?

Are you saying that these ads push them into victim mode?

Not at all..... what it does is tickle their fantasy and that lets them remember the thing they are supposed to buy.

Sorry oldstreet, but your comment makes no sense to me.

Advertising doesn't have to make sense..... just make you remember the product.

This one is hard for me to figure out. I don't buy "womens" clothing except for underwear and I still buy what I like and what is comfortable without looking at ads. All my jeans are men's wranglers and my shirts are t-shirts or men's sport shirts. I only buy clothes that I see in the store and I try on and I feel like I can wear all day and be comfortable. I guess that's because as a nurse I wore uniforms my whole adult life and now that I'm retired I have reverted back to the comfortable clothing I wore as a kid.

I asked my 2 teenaged daughters (16 & 18) about clothing ads for women and they said they buy clothing that's advertised to make you "more attractive" or "shows that all the popular girls" wear this brand but they didn't recall seeing ads that showed women being victimized.

I would not buy clothing that use advertizing to make women out as victims but I wonder if alot of women are like my daughters and buy clothes mostly by brands rather than ads? My girls don't really pay attention to ads but more to what their friends say is the hot name at the moment...tommy hilfiger, guess, nike etc.

Everyone who watches television has seen these ads and these ads advertise specifically to make you feel "more atrractive."

I don't watch tv and neither do my daughters. We get news from internet sources as well as using internet for entertainment. If we want to see movies we rent dvds or go to the theatre.

Good for you! I didn't raise my children on television either.
