By Ralph Richardson

While I was organizing and agonizing over this very important list of Top 25 African- American films of all time, I used some parameters to guide me. First, what is an African- American movie? It has to be:

a movie about the black experience;

and/or a movie that is written, produced and/or directed by black people;

and/or it has to be a movie with a black person in the lead role.

Secondly, what criteria would I use to select and rate each film? The barometers I used were cultural influence, internet polling, and box office revenue, spiced up with a dash of my own personal bias.

As I've not seen all the films on Mr. Richardson's list, I can't say I agree or disagree.

    Antwone Fisher: a really great movie. If you haven't seen it, please do check it out. And In the Heat of the Night deserved the #1 spot. Some classics worth checking out as well are The re-dos of books are worthless--read the book instead. How Stella got her Groove back is pure garbage as is Purple Rain (sorry Prince!).

    I recommend Eve's Bayou, Boyz 'n the Hood, and Black Orpheus along with Carmen Jones--an entirely underrated film.

    The rest of the 50s, 60s cinema listed I haven't seen.

    Antwone Fisher is one that I have seen and I enjoyed it. Not only did I enjoy it, I recommended it to friends and family.

    How Stella got her Grove Back was all right.

    I agree with about Purple Rain. I liked the music but not the music.

    I saw Eve's Bayou you but I can't remember it. It didn't leave an impression so I guess I didn't like it.

    Boyz'n the Hood is one of my favorites.

    Didn't see Black Orpheus.

    Liked Carmen Jones.
