Rocked by sex and pedophilia scandals, the Catholic church has been losing members by the millions. In light of all that, the church continues to push its way backward in time and pushing it's pro-life members further away -- case in point, Congressman Patrick Kennedy's denial of communion by Bishop Thomas Tobin.

Of course, what Tobin and others within the church don't want to bring to light is the fact that they are still protecting accused pedophiles and sex offenders. After the Kennedy story came to light, some brave church victims have stepped up to make their voices heard. From the AP:

Finally, a group standing up against the Catholic church for children molested by priests. Why does the Catholic church choose to protect priests who rape children rather then protect the children? Makes me wonder if the Catholic church is really a church or an organization that promotes and protects sex offenders.

How can a church preach pro-life and at the same time condone sex crimes and protect the offenders?

It's all about power and wedge issues. Why don't they deny communion to every member who's had a kid through in-vitro? They kill embryos there too. But no, the fertility clinic customers are good christians who want to multiply. The abortion customers are evil girls having sex out of wedlock!

The Church is nothing but a criminal, tyrannical, oppressive, greedy monarchy. I think Thomas Jefferson had pretty much the same opinion.

Our forefathers had a vision of a spiritually enlightened country where freedom of thought, education of the masses, and scientific advances would replace outdated religious superstition like that of the Catholic church. The only religious ideas our forefather put in place was religious freedom. Which in my opinion is freedom FROM and OF religion.

The Church is terribly conflicted - they want to do the right thing, but they get in their own way. Temporal concerns override the spiritual. Beyond that, though, there's another group that can be even worse. Those are the lawyers who would exploit the abused for gain. Money can not give recompense the wounds, or give back the lives ruined. It can provide some reparation. It can pay for some healing.

Beyond that, think of all the good the Church does before you condemn the whole institution. Many people in my area rely on it for emergency shelter, for educational alternatives to a broken public school system, for counseling, for a place of belonging, for the bare necessitites of life. The Church ministers to everyone from prisoners to the poor, and its true calling is to those who have nothing. To take these resources and destroy them out of hand is not something that should be done casually. And no, the government does not provide an alternative here.

Think, and choose carefully. How should we proceed to start to rebuild those torn down? The Church has much that it needs to be penitent for. How should that penance take place?

I'm sorry, but I do not see the leadership of the Catholic Corporation, in these actions, as being conflicted. They seem to know exactly what they want and are more then willing to get fully involved in our political lives to get their religious ignorance's way, and damn the consequences.

I won't even dignify that comment with any answer except to say that if you don't see the purpose, the mission, or the good, because you have some sort of anti-theist stick up your butt, then that's your privilege. Meanwhile, here's the ignore button for anything else you might happen to post. Goodbye, good luck, and better vision next time....

anti-theist

Look ma, they got em a new word..Simple direct truth always causes these kind to cry wounded, why is that?

Its not a balancing act, good does not forgive the bad the institution does.

My anti-theist position is called the separation of church and state and all I want is for the @!$%#s using their Catholic Corporation to mess about and to influence Politcs to stop doing the bad, they can keep the good.

Here is an American and a Catholic wiling to take on these mangy church bastards and their reach for political control of our government.

Remove this churches tax exemption. Total asset forfeiture for becoming illegal political action committee pretending to be churches. And yes, I mean take down the whole of every church under this asses administration.

Bishop my ass, he is an ignorant pandering howling fool for the 'c'hristianright. But then, as always, that's just, imho, of course.

And a big thanks to Matthews being a reasoning American before being a lick-spittle for the religious right, Catholic religious right fundamentalism or any other kind of religious right wing fundamentalism.

The church has among its parishioners divorced people, people living together, people having sex before marriage, people having affairs, people who have been convicted of crimes, and so on. Not to mention its enabling of pedophilia within its own ranks. Yet all of these people, who have gone against church teaching, still receive communion. That is reason alone to realize the church is full of holy crap.

The Catholic Church has no business inserting their moral code regarding abortion into the Health Care debate. The federal government is not the gatekeeper of the church's moral law. Let the church monitor their own members instead of inserting it into federal law. And it is no one' business who takes communion. That is between God and the individual. Can you imagine how many people take communion that are in not in a state of grace to take it? It is not our business. The church authority is made up of aging white males that have never experienced marriage, childbirth etc. They live a life of luxury in many cases, waited on by other people..........this is the real world.

They're still protecting identities of pedophiles? Oh, yeah...the Catholic Church is a sterling example of "Moral Authority" and "Moral Superiority."

Get "To Catch a Predator" back on the air, and turn them loose on the Catholic Church.

Anyone who still belongs to the Catholic church and tithes after this is equally responsible for the pedophilia, in my opinion.

Does that mean that anyone who does not denounce their US Citizenship is equally responsible for the war in Iraq? Or that anyone who does not quit working for Dupont or Dow or any of those companies is equally responsible for the pollution? Moral equivalency is fine and dandy, but you should never overlook the good that institutions do as well.

Or are you ready to move to East Timor?

We have a simple choice. If the Catholic Church is going to insist that the Pope, or the local Bishop in his stead, determines the public policy of any elected Catholic, our choice is to simply never vote for a Catholic. That's easy.

Our representatives are meant to represent their particular electorate, not some Pontiff in another place, from another time. Simply don't vote for any Catholics; that'll fix that problem. The next time a Catholic in your district comes up for election, make a fuss about this. It will be amusing to watch the Bishops wiggle.

And the Bishops will deserve what they get - a return to Avignon, or its equivalent. The Church needs to remember the gulf between spiritual primacy and temporal authority, and that the latter is their temptation that always comes back, ALWAYS comes back to be their ruin.

It's a fair question. There are several things that need to happen.

  1. There needs to be COMPLETE transparency in regards to anything having to do with the current pederasty scandal. That means opening up personnel records if need be, and definitely bringing out any
  2. Training needs to take place to make sure that ALL volunteers, lay employees, and especially ministers are thoroughly trained in youth protection (this is mandated already in my diocese, and in many others, but there are laggards.
  3. FAIR (not extortionate) recompense needs to be made to victims (but NOT to lawyers), in such a way that the Church isn't forced to shut down vital missions to the poor or other needs. Some dioceses are going to need help from Rome to accomplish this, and that help SHOULD be forthcoming. There are diplomatic problems having to do with tort reform in the USA on this one. Again, lawyers are screwing this one up.
  4. There have been numerous accusations that have been proven false on this front. These opportunistic scumbags are even worse parasites than the lawyers, and no justice in this world can touch what they truly deserve. But they deserve public humiliation for starters.
  5. Prayer. Lots and lots of prayer. Much of it should be prayers of contrition, much of it should be prayers of compassion. If you don't believe in prayer, then just kythe good thoughts. If you believe we just are animals who are born and die and that's it, then ignore this one, but don't laugh at how seriously some of us take it.

All of this will get the ball rolling. And much of it is happening. The pace isn't good enough, though. And those who hate organized religion are using it as a stick to whip the Church (with some, but not complete, merit.) We'll see what happens next. Keep the dialogue going! -k/ff

Tell me why should they be tax exempt on the money they take in? Income tax anyone? I pay boatloads of taxes my business brings in. After all religion is a business, income and expenses. And it should be treated as such.

It is no longer the "big 3" Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish. There are so many different religions now it's impossible to keep track. Anyone can be ordained with online courses and call your new found religion anything you wish and be tax exempt by following a few rules/laws. Fr. Dave in Ma. from the clean homes of America. Checks are not allowed, cash only, less to declare. We pass around "the plate" at 10,2,4 and 6 each day. The "ah @!$%# I @!$%#ed up again" confessions are heard at at 8-8:10 on second Thursday of the first week each month. Halafreakingwhooya!

let me see if i understand this correctly: for about 10 years we have been hearing stories of priest raing young boys, and tobin has been silent. now a member of the church is to be denied ommunion because of his stane on a womans right to choose. so, a priest will not be drfrocked or excommuniated when he is a ped, but a parisoner can be barred from communion for taking a stand that is legal, not criminal. tobin supports priests who commit criminal acts while attacking those who are supportd by law? how twisted is that?

now, the irish have a report about the sex abuse that their priest, with support from the gardi were able to commit. what a great church to belong to! NOT!!

So, the moral of the story according to the church is: Abortion = bad, pedophelia = good. I'm glad we cleared that up.

I don't hate organized religion but I see the harm it has caused and continues to cause to those I know who believe in something that can't be proven to exist.

A friend who recently died and who was a Catholic didn't deal with the cancer in the Catholic church--she only dealt with what she called the good. By her and others like her closing their eyes to the cancer by deliberate omission, in my opinion, are saying all is good as long as it doesn't touch me and mine.

With the Catholic church still in existence, her way of thinking goes to confirm this is the common belief of those who are still affiliated with the Catholic church. Or, the fear of obedience beaten into them as children is so deep in their sub-conscience that they are too afraid to leave.

What a jerk.. so up-right and true to God. Not.

"Protect the unborn children" by telling politicians how they must vote now becomes "I do my best to protect the buggerers of children already born"

Keep monumental hypocrites like these out of America's body politic.

It is your right to look up the "The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Providence" website and email your pleasure to Bishop Tobin. The media page has an communications email link on the middle left side above several other links.

Please refrain, if you can, from venting with your worst instincts.

Once again the hypocritical moral minority has over-rotated and completely misplayed their hand of God in every-bodies lives without accountability. It is time to strip the church of its federal tax-exempt and states property exempt statuses for obvious violations of the separation of church and state by a religious non-profit entity.

This country was founded on the principals that left this kind of religious manipulation back in Europe. Religion is an insidious infection that threatens our national rights and personal decisions. Religion is slowly dismantling our constitution, and that is the very reason why the Islamic Jihadists are after us because they view the United States as Christian Jihadists!

      Case in point:

Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld used Christian biblical references in George W. Bush's daily national security briefings. George W thought he was on a mission from God to convert Iraq into a Christian capitalistic God fearing country instead of a Sadam Hussien fearing country. Hence the war in Iraq, the ball dropped with al-Qaida and the islamic jihadist out to get us until we are all dead...
