Native American Cherokees voted to expel descendants of black slaves from their tribe nation in a special election that has prompted charges of racism, according to returns made public early Sunday.

But a vote of 77 percent to 23 percent, the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma adopted Saturday an amendment to their constitution that strips membership from so-called "Freedmen," those descended from slaves once owned by Cherokees, blacks who were married to Cherokees and children of mixed-race families.

From the information I would say that this appears to be racism.

A few years back after performing a same sex marriage for two women, they changed their laws dating back hundreds of years to ban such marriages.
They are rapidly becoming the anti-cherokee cherokee nation.

See that is what you get with a pure Democracy, majority wins. If they were a Republic and they had acknowledged rights that said they were part of the indian nation forever this could not have been done to them (at least without a constitutional amendment).
Uh-oh, I just remembered. I'm not pure bred Indian either. Yikes! I could be Next! Oh well guess I better get used to checking the "Caucasian" box on those forms.....

I wonder if that would go for their childrens children too
From what I read it does sound like racism to me as well

Funny according to the Liberal Manifesto it cant be racism because minority's can not be racist.
Tim, That is not true. The "Liberal Manifesto" you are talking about must have been written by a right-wing zealot. They love to make statements that are distortions of the truth and blatant lies.

has nothing to do with the topic. If you disagree please take your dispute to Tyler because this topic has nothing to do with the UK or Russia.

What the Cherokee are voting to do probably is racist but it was the govt. that put them on a reservation and designated them as a separate people in the first place, which as it turns out was probably not a bad thing. It is, whether the rest of the country likes it or not, up to the Cherokee people to determine what qualifies or not.

Regardless of what is or isn't fair, to me it's just a little bit startling. I think it's unfair to the descendants of mixed heritage. This is wrong on so many levels.
- 4 votes
I don't really think it is fair or right either, but it is still their call.
- 3 votes
Yes, it is their call but I'm just offering an opinion here on Newsvine. It's like a whole group of people will now be erased from history and I find that disturbing. Like you said, it is their call but it's a bad one. It's like they're wanting to purify their race and I've heard those words before.

I agree, they should re think what they are doing. After 141 years there are going to be a lot of people with nowhere to go most likely. From the article, it sounded like it was more about money than anything else.
I once had a friend that said he was prejudiced against anybody that said they were pure anything, because nobody is.

I totally agree with your friend, atsidiwashichu. People would be surprised at what runs through their bloodline if they were to have DNA testing done.

I watched a show one time along time ago, where a racist family got magically changed to another color, I thought it was one of the best shows I had seen, I think it may have been on Mork and Mindy, but I'm not really sure, lol, So if anyone remembers this show please let me know.
Only thing I know that I'm pure of is, I'm Pure American :-}
Though at one time I did have chance to say I was part Canadian citizenship as well as one of my ancestors did come from Canada, but this year the Canadians changed their amendments to citizenship to be the ones in america that were 1st generation born. So I guess I am no longer part Canadian either :-{

I'm with you beaumrtn, I'm pure American. I know the show you're talking about because I saw it too but it's been so long I can't remember the show's name.

This seems unfair, but it does make sense.
Tribal organisations aren't usually the richest in the world. They have limited resources and lands. And with so many people claiming (truthfully or not) to be of indigenous descent, these people find themselves in a position where they have to clarify who does or doesn't qualify as a member of their ethnic group or face impoverishment in many respects.
When an ethnic group is so dilute as to accept anyone and everyone, it loses all meaning and is destroyed. These people have demonstrated a lot of courage to try and preserve who they are as a people. I'm sure they'll catch a lot of flak, but a little criticism is acceptable in return for survival.

Just a note as to how the freed slaves of the Cherokee became tribe members. The Cherokee were to receive considerations for accepting their slaves as tribal members. As with most promises made to native tribes, the US reneged. Perhaps the Cherokee have the right to ignore their part of the agreement as well...

Well, the Cherokees may have voted to expel Blacks from their tribe nation but thank God, the history books haven't or won't. Blacks will always be known as an integral part of Cherokee history.

Really I was born and raised on CHerokee reservation and still live there... I dont think you people have ANY clue what it was like before the 1990s or is even still like in some places to this day.

What does that have to do with the topic being discussed? Are you in Oklahoma? Where?

The article is two years old, nevertheless , this disclaimer has a familiar ring to it...
"But this is not my Cherokee Nation. My Cherokee Nation is one that honors all parts of her past."
And here is a where-it-started footnote:
....the one-drop rule. At the turn of the 19th century, the U.S. government relied on that racist tool, originally used to determine whether people were black or not, in combination with other factors for a census of people living on Native American tribal lands. Time

It is racist; and the Cherokee's have been white washed along with everybody else to think they are not racist; and for some reason to think they are pure; when they are not. How could they be pure anything; especially after dancing with wolves. Unfortunately the women suffer the most because their head of household rights were removed when the white man came in; and the men decided to bellieve in a Father, Son and Holy Ghost religion; that doesnt even see the necessilty of a woman. But you cant have a Father or Son unless the Holy Ghost is actually a Hostess, Goddess, Mother or Daughter and that included Jesus Christ himself.
Peace out

I like the way you think MC! The worse thing that could have happened to the Cherokee is their embracing the Father, Son and Holy Ghost religion. They gave away their culture when they embraced the European religion.
