I was diagnosed with A.A.A.D.D

I received this in an email.

Recently, I was diagnosed with A.A.A.D.D. - Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder.

This is how it manifests:

I decide to water my garden. As I turn on the hose in the driveway, I look over at my car and decide it needs washing. As I start toward the garage, I notice mail on the porch table that I brought up from the mailbox earlier. I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car.

I lay my car keys on the table, put the junk mail in the garbage can under the table, and notice that the can is full. So, I decide to put the bills back on the table and take out the garbage first. But then I think, since I'm going to be near the mailbox when I take out the garbage anyway, I may as well pay the bills first.

I take my checkbook off the table and see that there is only one check left. My extra checks are in my desk in the study so I go inside the house to my desk where I find the can of Coke I'd been drinking. I'm going to look for my checks but first I need to push the Coke aside so that I don't accidentally knock it over.

The Coke is getting warm so I decide to put it in the refrigerator to keep it cold. As I head toward the kitchen with the Coke, a vase of flowers on the counter catches my eye—they need water. I put the Coke on the counter and discover my reading glasses that I've been searching for all morning. I decide I better put them back on my desk, but first I'm going to water the flowers.

I set the glasses back down on the counter, fill a container with water, and suddenly spot the TV remote. Someone left it on the kitchen table. I realize that tonight when we go to watch TV I'll be looking for the remote but I won't remember that it's on the kitchen table, so I decide to put it back in the den where it belongs, but first I'll water the flowers.

I pour some water in the flowers but quite a bit of it spills on the floor. So, I set the remote back on the table and get some towels and wipe up the spill. Then, I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to do.

At the end of the day the car isn't washed. The bills aren't paid. There is a warm can of Coke sitting on the counter. The flowers don't have enough water. There is still only 1 check in my checkbook. I can't find the remote. I can't find my glasses and I don't remember what I did with the car keys.

Then, when I try to figure out why nothing got done today I'm really baffled because I know I was busy all damn day, and I'm really tired. I realize this is a serious problem and I'll try to get some help for it but first I'll check my e-mail.

Do me a favor. Forward this message to everyone you know because I don't remember who the hell I've sent it to.

Don't laugh -- if this isn't you yet, your day is coming!!

This describes me every day. I like to call it "multitasking" but since nothing gets accomplished AAADD is probably a better name for it!

Multitasking - LOL! Perfect description of my mother. She's also the type of person that rushes into a room hell bent on some task, and then just stands there trying to remember why she's there. AAADD must be genetic, tho. I'm seeing more and more of these kinds of days in my own life as I get older. Senility, perhaps?

Google "Getting Things Done". There are lots of computer programs for that system, but you could do it with a piece of paper. Sure cure for AAADD.

As an organizing consultant, I met many people with the same problem. It doesn't seem to matter what age you are, how much money you have, or what your background is. It's called life. We do the best we can and when we have a day when nothing seems to get done, take a deep breath and know you aren't alone!

While humorous (and it is) the really sad thing is that there are children, in this country & every part of the world today who sit there, & wonder why they have to take toxic chemicals to as "treatment" to what you are accurately describing as our society.

What make this sad is that there are unscrupulous people who make BILLIONS on these kids.

Here's a great video on the nature of psychiatry.

For sure! Many days of my days end up like that! Very well written article and a sense of humor about it! I'm not sure if I need a seminar on organization. And at my age, I'm probably not going to change my ways.

I swear when my three children were home, I remained much more organized. There were many specific things I had to keep tract of in order to keep everything going. I also held a full time job, and only had so much time to accomplish the basics.

Now that I am semi-retired, with no children to organize, I multitask more often, and sometimes, accomplishish little. But it's ok, to be AAADD! There is a great joy to being able to overbook my time at home, and only do mini-jobs.

After having worked full time, raising three boys, going back to school to get another degree, and caring for my elderly mother for seven years, I think I'm entitled!

AAADD hit me this evening! A friend and I went to a comedy club this evening. I gave the waiter our order and when he repeated it back, I drew a blank and it took a while for me to gather my thoughts. The waiter was nice though. He laugh and said, "take your time", it happens a lot to some people. If only he knew.

Was going to reply to this yesterday - or was that last week? Anyway, I know it was on a friday, but my grandaughter dropped off the baby so she could run some errands and the baby was half-way through a bottle so I went to the linen closet for a burp cloth but the light was out. I put down the baby bottle and went to the bathroom closet to get a light bulb. On the shelf beside the bulbs, I found the book I had been reading the other day (easier to say that than pinpoint it any closer), so I picked up the book and headed back to the linen closet but the baby had burped by this time so I took the book into the den to leave it by my reading chair and might have started reading it if the baby hadn't begun to fuss for the rest of her bottle... which I couldn't find. Luckily, her mother had left an extra bottle with me... Finally found the half empty baby bottle on the shelf in the darkened linen closet. It would have been a lot easier to find if someone had replaced the light bulb.
