Black lawmakers irked by Obama's diverse Cabinet

Some members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) are disappointed President-elect Obama did not appoint more African-Americans to his Cabinet.

Obama tapped four blacks for Cabinet posts, including Eric Holder. If confirmed, Holder will be the first African-American attorney general.

But Obama passed over black candidates in selecting Cabinet nominees for positions central to setting policy for urban America, such as the departments of Education, Labor, and Housing and Urban Development.

Hispanic Americans, by contrast, have been nominated for three Cabinet positions, and politicians from that constituency have hailed Obama's nominations.

"Did the African-American community probably expect more appointees at that level? Probably so," said Rep. Danny Davis (D-Ill.), an early Obama supporter who has expressed an interest in filling Obama's vacant Senate seat.

I too am disappointed because I expected true diversity and not a sprinkling. Obama choices are not a true representation of America.

Really?  Four African Americans, three Hispanics, and two Asian Americans?  That's nine cabinet-level racial minorities, and the cabinet itself is about 20 or so positions.  Let's say 24 to be a bit generous.  That's more than a third of the positions going to racial minorities.

Four out of 24 would put African American representation at about 16%.  Four out of 20 would put their representation at 20%.   2007 census estimates put African Americans as a proportion of the population at less than 13%, so Obama's cabinet actually slightly over represents them.

The tone of the article is we want more blacks in there. The other minority groups represented are happy campers. The article reminds me of the "you white people are in trouble now" garbage I was hearing a lot right after the election.

At some point people might start to realize Obama isn't about pushing "his people" whatever others might perceive that to be and he's not going to usher in all of his "cronies". That would defeat the purpose of his message about unifying people. He went for a diverse background and looked at experience and knowledge.

Just look at the sentence "Those three departments are going to be run by white men." They put the one sentence out by itself for emphasis. In other words, no white man can effectively run the department? At least Obama doesn't stereotype and discriminate.

      How do you know this?

That's just going by this article of course.

The numbers they list of how many of each group seems fairly proportionate to the population. It also says he's going for people with experience and diverse backgrounds. That seems pretty well in keeping with the message he's had all along. Articles like this one make me smile and think "Joke's on you". I know a lot of people in my area voted for his color and aren't too happy now that they're realizing he really is about diversity.

Race will be an issue for many years to come. Why, because some people need race as a crutch to justify their own fears or lack of success. Thank God most of us have gone past slavery and manzonar. There are great citizens of all races, why, because they refuse to where the label of being some what less than the norm.

That's what I like so much about Obama. Instead of sitting around blaming everyone else for his humble beginnings he worked his way to where he is. He makes no apologies or excuses. Racism won't go away any time soon but I hope he is able to at least get us started down that path. I'm just so tired of the racist garbage and saddened that the media supports it and keeps it going.

Race will always be an issue, as long as there are people willing to make it one!

Race shouldn't be an issue but it still is. One day we will all look beyound color.

One day we will all look beyond color but today is not that day and until that day, as many Americans as possible should be represented. Native Americans among all Americans have not been represented properly and Obama not selecting a Native American to head major cabin position is a slap in the face to that particular base.

Even if I did it wouldn't make a bit of difference because it's the responsibility of Obama's transition team to find them and yes, I believe there are qualified Native Americans who could fill some of those positions.

Not doubting that there are. Just wasnt aware. It actually is Native American jobs to apply, then it is Obama's job to consider them. I just didnt know if any had applied and been looked over. But I am all for diversity everybody deserves a voice
