(London) M15, Britain's domestic spy agency, has begun looking for gays and lesbians to help it keep tabs on threats to the country.

The agency has contracted with LGBT rights group Stonewall to help it recruit members of the community and to encouraged gays already in the service to come out.

The move, said Stonewall spokesperson Ben Summerskill, "is in recognition that the establishment is changing and slowly becoming more reflective of wider society."

The British military long ago abandoned its ban on gays serving openly and also recently asked Stonewall for help in recruitment. M16, the country's foreign intelligence service, ended its ban on gay spies a year ago.

Honestly, I never thought this would even be a problem.

Once upon a time government considered gay men and women so spooky they fired us from sensitive positions and refused to grant us security clearances. We're still the same gay men and women. Why are we suddenly "spook" worthy a la James B? The US Army mustered out 63 Arabic-speaking translators because they were gay. Even if no one asks, and you don't tell your life can still be in danger. Why is there a gay spy in the eye mindset now? How have we changed? Has the spy workplace changed?  Will we be assigned the most dangerous missions because we're, well, expendable? Or is it there are some gay boys and girls out in the cold, the figurative cold, that is, who are gay and the agency hopes we will click with them in our special way? There are more questions. We need more answers.
