The prospect of an African American president is bringing the nation's white supremacists out of the shadows—and, along with them, some subtler versions of racialist populism. Both hearken back to another economically and socially turbulent time in the United States, in the early 1980s.

It is a sad state of affairs when Americans still see one another as us against them. When will these people wake up and realize that there is no us against them? As long as we have this sort of mentality it's going to take a little while longer for us to come together as a people and as a country. As long as we maintain this sort of mentality politicians will continue to run roughshed over us.

It scares me that we haven't learned from our history.

It doesn't scare me that we have not learned, it makes me angry to see the constant seeds and stories that are hell bent on trying to link Obama to terrorism.

      Look at him!!!

From the 1st time I saw him until now, I have not seen him loose control once.

He is methodical and commands respect.

There is nothing in his manor that suggests revenge.

I see nothing but vengeance, anger, fear, and hate out of both Palin and McCain.

Did you hear about the reporter who asked Sen. Obama if he would have trouble voting for himself or making a choice because he is half white?  He didnt answer him and just flashed those pearly whites and smiled at him like he was Mac the Knife.

      Peace Out

Are you referring to The Daily Show interview on Comedy Central?

I'm not sure where the guy was from, but I think it was Chris Mathews on MSNBC who picked it up which is where I heard about it from.

It was the Daily Show, just saw the "tape" of it from my DVR.

He also made like he was fighting with himself, it was a joke.

Marsha, it was not a reporter, it was Jon Stewart on the comedy network's show, the daiily show. IT WAS A COMEDY SCHTICK!

The Daily Show goes over the head of people who are intellectually challenged.  It's a great show.

To me, the fear seems to be that Senator Obama will take revenge....revenge implies a previous assault on the avenger.  What does that say about the fearful?  This is very sad because if these people's only source of self-esteem stems from "at least I am white," it means to me that they have no other source of pride, accomplishment, or aspiration in their entire little lives, except that they were born with a certain skin tone.  My self-esteem stems from a lot of life experiences and in no way comes from the color of my skin.....just a thought.

People are saying that if Obama doesn't win there will be rioting in the streets on Wednesday.  I feel more confident that if he DOES win, there will be rioting on Wednesday.

I wonder if there will be reports of suicides?

To think they may have killed all of those children.  The article said Obama wasn't in any real danger with their plot, but many kids could have been killed.  I can't understand where this hate comes from.  What are they scared of? Anymore than I can understand hate towards the white community.  Wonder why Obama sat in Mr. Wright's church and listened to some hate speech.  Why do people do this?  Even an abused person doesn't hate all.  They know that not all people are abusers.  I can't imagine anything in their lives that personally happened to them to make them haters.

Obviously you haven't kept up with the news. SEN Obama was not in the church when REV Wright made those sermons. And those sermons, in my opinion, were not of hate but truth. REV Wright was speaking from his generation and that generation experienced hate, bodily harm, lived in fear, and denied an education and jobs that paid a living wage. Heck! Let's be truthful here. They were given jobs that were demeaning when they were given jobs at all. It wasn't until recently that they were allowed to work in professional fields and still, few hold professions as chairmans, head corporations, play leading men and women in movies, work in television in front of the camera, etc. If we look around us, there are few minorities working in prominent positions. I don't blame any culture for their anger. They pay taxes like the rest of us but they receive almost no representation. You can see it in their schools and communities. When you've spent your entire life being beaten down, it's hard to forget thought you might forgive.

So you are saying that some hate is reasonable?

I'm saying that you don't know the difference between hate and anger.

Preaching anger can turn into hate.

                            Tim--

The night Obama won the nomination of his party, my 7 year old son and I were sitting on the couch and my wife in the chair next to us. Tears had welled and began streaming down my face as I took in the magnitude of this baby step that our society was taking.

My son looked up at me and inquisitively asked why I had tears. I attempted my best explanation for his level as to my personal feelings.

My son could not understand why it was such a historic moment. He simply thought that he was a man and the best woman or man competed to win the contest.

Through his simplistic view of how ideally life should be, I found the hope and motivation I needed.

Many open-minded folk have talked over the past year, some hushed and some loudly, about the scary premise that the most closed-minded, bigoted, disgusting, whackjobs will come out of the woodwork as we get closer to election day. Just scary @!$%#, simply scary.

I look at my son and daughter, their acceptance of people for who they are and I am 1) a proud father for the effort I have put into rearing responsible compassionate citizens and 2) hopeful for the day (although many many moons away) that we the people as a collective will accept people for who they are.
